why would you : eBay Motors: 1953 T0 1955 FORD TRUCK OUTSIDE REARVIEW MIRRORS (item 140264916720 end time Sep-13-08 20:19:51 PDT)

when you could buy these from Mid-50 or Obsolete for 37 a piece + shipping?

and lastly,....

This sure isn't an uncommon occurrence on the 'Bay. I see goofs overpay almost every time I check the site.

My favorite was a year or so ago, there was a complete, new stainless grill kit for a '48-50 starting at $65, the seller said he bought, installed in his truck and didn't like how it look but it was brand new with all of the clips. Normally they sell new from the vendors for around $200. I figured what the heck I'll throw $75 and see what happens. A week later no else bid and I got it for $65. The following another seller had the same story, didn't like the look, also a brand new kit, starting bid $75. This time the seller included in his description the part number and the cost new from Dennis Carpenter, even giving a link to Carpenter's web site for reference. A week later the kit sold for $230! I have seen flat head fuel pumps sell for over $80-90, I bought mine from NAPA for $40.

I think a lot of this over bidders are just too lazy to look around to find the parts. It's just a lot easier for them to go to eBay plop down a high bid and have it delivered a week and have later. I would rather shop around and find the best deal.

I've enjoyed it as a seller as well...

I got a '53 F-100 grille complete with rings, buckets, plugs and all. $9.99 and I had my wife pick it up on her way home from Ft Worth... best score yet.

I just bought a used 3/4 HP electric motor off the bay. The same seller had two of them, ending about 10 minutes apart. The first one sold for somewhere around $75. I got the other one 10 minutes later for $36. They were virtually identical.

BTW -- I'm thinking of stockpiling small electric motors. Have you priced a new one lately???? A brand new Dayton or GE in 3/4 HP is $380!! A 5HP 3-phase is A THOUSAND DOLLARS!! There is a lot of equipment at garage sales, etc., that may be worth buying just for a good used motor.

Any one see the NOS bench seat for a '48-'52 F-1 that was on u-pay last week .Sold for $1890.50 . How brittle do you think the vinyl was ? I know a very talented truck builder that could make a seat look NOS for that kind of money or a whole lot less . Have sold new items for 4X the cost of the retailer .Some times I just don't get it .

Wow! That is unbelievable. I usually won't even bid on any item on E-bay if I know I can get it new at a parts house like Napa or order it from places like Mid-Fifty, Sacramento.vin. Ford or the others. The main reason being is if the part is defective, incorrect etc. I can take it back and know the place will make it good. I'm sure there are some reputable "dealers" on E-bay but I don't want to chance it. By the way, I have a NOS 48-52 bench seat for sale!
Just kidding.....

Well, that is unbelievable condition, but I just can't believe anyone would pay that much. Hell, you can't sell a whole stock restored Bonus Built for much more than $12k. One went on eBay with like 13k miles, absolutely beautiful, no one bid over $11k. And a seat is worth $2k???

There could be several reasons.

Most likely, they may not be aware of all the various parts sources out there. Or they don't shop around for the best price.

Sometimes, they get caught up in the bidding frenzy. Maybe they got beat out on a previous auction, and were not going to let this one get away. (I've been caught in that trap, and that's why I usually use eSnipe for the items I really want.)

On the other hand, I have gotten some really good deals on eBay. I had gotten an email "Special" offer from Eastwood for some panel welding clamps (Intergrip), a set of 4 for a "special" price. I filled in the order page, and was just about to click the order button, when I got the idea to check eBay. A little looking around, and I found the same item for about half the price.

Not everyone makes the effort to find the best deal.

In any case, the guy that bought the mirrors is probably satisfied with his deal. (At least until he finds out what he could have saved.)

The buyer of the seat could be a intense truck restorer. The cab I used on my F-2 came from a F-8 firetruck with 3000 original miles. I sold the remainder of the truck to a avid '48-50 Ford truck collector for $100 more than I paid for the entire truck. The following spring I traded the same guy the original fire truck seat for a perfect reupholstered seat, two F-2 front clips and a pair of very nice F-2 running boards. After the deal was made and I had my parts loaded in a trailer I asked why he was willing to trade all those parts for a seat that was as nice as the one he gave me. He told me he had a semi trailer out back that he had every NOS parts, including a NOS frame, but he didn't have an original seat and the seat I had was original and perfect, absolutely no flaws. He was planning to build a brand new F-2 with all of the NOS parts.

As for my buying on the 'Bay, for my business I go check it out first whenever I need a tool or supplies. I have found some really good deals. I bought a 2 year FlexArm tool a couple of years back for $900, it sells new for around $5400! I've also bought a lot of truck parts for very good prices, sometimes I just luck out.

Its always buyer beware or rather be smart at any auction whether live or internet based like ebay. I myself have been caught up in the moment and overpaid for items just because I didn't want that other SOB to get it, LOL.

Like it or not, Ebay serves a purpose and makes many difficult or impossible items available to anyone willing to pony up the $$$.
