Have a 2003 V10 Limited that has the ABS light on the dash on. Just happened today, any ideas on what to check and is this truck safe to drive as is until I can either fix it myself or bring it in to the dealer.
Just a shot in the dark..... In addition to several other symptoms and malfunctions, my ABS light came on when the wiring inside the steering column had become exposed.
This thread covers the exposed wiring problems too. Seems like it's happening to more and more Excursions. And like I said, the ABS light coming on was one of my symptoms as my wiring became exposed.
You could also check the wiring and the sensor on top of the rear diff. You can pull the sensor out and clean it if it is gunked up with stuff. Sometimes that works. The sensor is the speed sensor and the ABS uses it.
Front ABS sensors could also be dirty but that requires you to pull the wheels.
Both are the first things to check (along with VaSheriff's suggestion) since all of them don't cost anything but time.
Thanks guys for the fast reply. Yep I have followed the steering column wire thread and will check that and the sensor on the rear diff as well. BTW the light went out this morning.
Monsta: where on the front are the sensors after the wheels come off?
I just finished this process tonight. Sure enough the VSS was gunked with lots of muck! I cleaned it off and put it all back together... no more ABS light.
