ok...here's what i want to offroad with. A 92-96 F-250 extended cab short bed. I know its kinda a long wheelbase, but thats what i've had my best luck with off roading. a well built small block 351, lighter than a big block to save some front axle weight, but i wouldn't mind a big block if someone gave it to me. Fuel injection is a must for off camber situations, than i'd pipe that power through a newer 4 spd auto, i don't mind manuals, but i'm a fan of autos on the trail, a np205 transfer case,,,strength is good. dana 60 front and rear, eaton e-lockers in both,,,they haven't been released yet,,but they kick a** and i'm buying two when they are released. for a lift i'd go with a 8-9 inch suspension lift and trim fenders to fit 40" boggers under there. warn premium hubs for the front. a warn 15000 lb winch mounted to the front and another to the rear. I like the extended cab because you've got tons of space for crap out of the mud and rain. Well here's what i'd go with, i'm sure theres lots of you who'll tell me this would suck for trail rides,,,yeah its big, but its a good combo. and to those of you who would build samuris to four wheel with,,,more power to ya...you'll need it.
Mine wouldn't be that big but quite similar. A 95-97 F350 crew cab 4x4 with the 4 speed auto and NP 205. Then iw ould give it a mild 4 inch lift, through some 35's and AR rims on it. The engine would be a 7.3 litre diesel with a Banks Power Pack on it like they did to the Plain Jane in the latest Four Wheeler. The factory running gear would be quite strong enough for what I would use it for so I am not to worried about that. I think this truck will be my next because its not that out of reach unless I look at my bank statements
My ultimate off road machine (besides a custom built rig) would be my truck w/ a few more goodies Here's what I want:
76 F250 reg cab, long bed, Modified (400hp) 460EFI, NP435 tranny, NP205 T-case, add on overdrive unit between the tranny and T-case, Custom 3 link, coil over front suspension w/ 12" travel remote resevoir shocks, High pinion Dana 60 frnt. axle w/ Eaton e-locker, Dana 60 rear w/ Eaton e-locker, Full roll cage, 4 pt harneses, and of course, a set of 44" Boggers on 15x14" beadlock wheels.
An 80-86 f-350 reg cab., LWB, carbed 460, t-18, swapped in D60's, dual detroits, 4.56 gears, 8"(ish) lift, 38.5x15x16.5 ground hawg radials on 16.5x12 rims, PTO winch in bed, milemarker 12K winch in front, top of the line cobra cb(with upper and lower sidebands) and dual 8' whip antennas!
what else is there to say?? Oh yeah, YEE HAW!!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Jun-02 AT 00:53 AM (EST)]i would take my 79 listed below, put ox lockers front and rear, 16.5x14 stockton wheels with 44 boggers, 5.13 gears, get custom driveshafts made with 1410 joints, driveshaft loops, set my 460 up to run a blower, 35 spline axles front and rear, rear pto winch, front 15000lb warn to go on my bumper, mount the radiator in the bed, dual 4inch stacks in the front corners of the beds, seperate front and rear brake locks, and finally a twin stick conversion for my 205 case
and finally, hydraulic ram steering
the neww fmtv series army 5 ton trucks work amazing off road. the 4 wheel version on;y costs around 120 grand. i have taken them through som mud that i wouldn't even consider taking the bronco.(even with liquid courage)
2002 F250 With 4 door cab and long bed, 8 inch lift with finder triming. 40 inch boggers in front, swampers in the rear. Full roll cage, romoval of the roof, so i could watch the mud fling. 7.3 with 6 speed. 4.56 gears, and four seats with 4 point belts to hold my friends in. i forget the size of the winch but the latest big winch from warren. And i would put ARB locker in the rear, with a lock-right in the front, air tank in the rear along with twin dry cell batteries. Maybe a pto winch for the rear, since the Ford trannies come stock with them (chevy has a high priced optional one hehe) Specially made lights i nch tall 3 inches wide to fit on the front and rear axle, wiring running on the brake lines. The only other thing i would have is i wouldn't be a broke sixteen year old. but until that day it's an 85 4x4 with a 300.
I would take my deuce and a half, 6.72 gears in rockwell axels, granney gear, very low transfer case gears, good flexibility, just needs good off road tires. I wanna put in a 460 when the diesel finally dies, or a 534 industrial motor. nothing beats a 6x6, it allready has onboard air also, and a removable top, when the cab rusts out, it is gettinga 78 crewcab.
