How does this work. The manual says its best to have it off for better gas mileage. I am being told by friends to leave it on, when the truck is started it is automatically on. Which tells me it is suppose to be on. Is it for hills while pulling a load? Excuse the simple question but just got the truck and love it. Want to make sure I treat it right. Thanks
Ok, when you leave it alone, the vehicle will automatically shift into overdrive when it reaches a certain speed. This ensures maximum fuel economy. If you press the button, it disables overdrive. This is used when you are towing.
Might I make a suggestion. Your car comes with an Owners Manual, and its purpose is not to teach you how to drive, but rather to let you know what features your vehicle has, and how to use them. I recommend that everyone read their owners manuals.
Thanks, for the replies. Could the reason the truck starts in O/D be a precaution measure incase you forget to turn it on while towing? I know that with the O/D on I am getting poor fuel economy. I'll try turning it off for a tank of gas to gauge the economy.
You do not want to tow in overdrive. Overdrive is like fith gear and is only for "better" gas milage. My manual says not to tow in O/D. Truck starts in O/D as this is the default if you are not towing. When towing, you should turn off the O/D. O/D is like a very high gear that allows the engine to run at lower RPMs at higher speeds with lighter loads. Using O/D for towing or carrying heavy loads will cause the engine to lug and the transmission to overstress itself.
