NP 205 identification

NP 205 identification
I recently aquired a transfer case and was told it was an NP 203. I am starting to question this because the NP 203 is a full time chain driven case right? Well this case sounds like it is gear driven and has a cast iron case weighting a ton. I pulled some numbers off the tag: Asembly # D8TA-7A195-AA, Model 2 20, Ratio 1.96, Serial 01-21-78. Is this the 205?

You have the model number on that tag.

I don't know about the 220.
I am not sure if this will work but, you could possbily take out the fill and drain plugs and you might be able to see if it is chain or gear driven.
Gear driven = 205
chain = something elso I believe that the 203 and 208 are chain driven

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Aug-02 AT 01:37 PM (EST)]If memory serves, I think one side of the 203's case is aluminum. The 205 is ALL cast iron. I just went thru this same thing identifying the 205 in my 79 donor mobile.
