Thanks Indy_Gearhead71 you are right, I took it on a long highway run with the O/D on and off, with the O/D off the rpm's increased about 1,000. Thanks for the help.
This sounds like a real possibility to me as well.
The temp ended up getting quite erratic and my pops ended up taking it to a mechanic who replaced the thermostat for $150. It seems to be doing better now, though not great, and it seems to be real thirsty. After letting her sit for a while I keep needing to put in more coolant and there doesn't seem to be a leak.
But now she's idling rough as well...so I think it may be about time for a new junker.
if the car keeps boiling over then i would also look at the rad cap....in the cooling system the water is over boiling temp but because it is under presher it does NOT boil most of the time. also if you are lossing coolent but can not see a leak and have been adding coolent when the engine is hot you could have cracked the block and are burning off the coolent...
just some more things to look at, replacing a thermostat is a shot in the dark most of the time when it comes to over heating cars.
a craked block is real posibility in my mind...when you add cold water to a hot engine it can happen...my bro did it to a GMC pickup. Check the oil for water if there is water droplets on the dipstick then it IS time for a new car or engine.
