Hello,
I recently purchased a 2002 Escape AWD With a bad transmission.
While inquiring about rebuilding cost with a transmission shop, the fella told me to not even think about changing the transmission without a car hoist. He said the AWD Escapes are a nightmare to change. He said it has a CD4E transmission in it. The only previous car transmission I changed was a Toyota Camry. I am not a great mechanic, but like to try something new.
Are the Escapes that impossible? Thanks for any advice.
I think there may be a post here or on the escape-city forum where a member changed the trans by using a hoist. It can be done. It seems it is always easier when you have access to expensive toys.
I cannot remember which way he went, dropping it out the bottom or hoisting, but the former requires the vehicle to be raised for clearance to slide the bell housing under the body. You of course have to support the engine as / after you disconnect it from the transmission. The wheels and axles have to be removed also. I'm not sure if you can pry the hub far enough to free the axle spline, avoiding strut/ball joint/tie rod disconnects.

Thanks for the response. What I meant was to hoist the entire car up on a lift versus getting it up on jackstands. Are these transmission more difficult to take out than others? That is the way the transmission guy made it sound. Was it an especially big job to replace transmissions in a Ford Escape? Thanks again.
