Saw a 93 Firebird with a LS-1 engine "mild cam" and stripped for a race car yesterday for $1000. I would think this would be a fun car to have. Any ideas on how fast it might be?
well how fast the 'sold to the public' base car was is well publicized.
the 93 had an 'LT1', not LS1. this was 275hp and rose to about 305 on 97-98 models.
It had the distinction of using the reverse cooling and the reliability challenged 'opti spark' system that looked like a distributor where a water pump should be.
what 'mild' cam means on this engine is anyones guess. in 93 the ECM was speed density and batch fired so increases due to cam changes are limited.
however, you did type 'LS1'.
LS1s bolt in there, but it requires a whole crapload of other changes to make work. your first order of bizness is to determine what engine is in there.
open her up and tell us if there is a distributor where the water pump should be, or little coils on the valve covers...
For $1,000, shouldn't be too hard of a decision. Sounds rather low, actually. Might there be some major problems if it's being sold for peanuts?? I see "stripped for race car", so is it even street legal?
If the engine was running right, I would guess at sea level it would be good for maybe a 13.5 sec. 1/4 mile. If the cam is more wild than mild, in the 12s, assuming posi rear w/ gears.
pft if you got a 1000 dollars to blow.... give him half and say you want a test drive... take it down to the tracks.... and hit the gas.... its the only way to ever really know for sure... its like when people ask in the slick section... how much do you think my truck is worth.... 1965 352ci... custom cab... and then shows no pictures.... welll i could say the truck is worth 3000 dollars but find out the bed cab fenders frame and any other part of the truck looks likes its been threw a under powered scraper.... and only worth scrap metal....
