I have an Intermatic 300watt transformer that I currently am only using 219watts of. I'd like to add a couple of 50watt lights in my system but that will put me 19watts over the rated capacity. Do you think this will cause a problem or will it be OK?
For a 300 watt transformer, I wouldn't go over a 275 watt load. I always like to keep a tiny bit of headroom. I've messed with transformers like those before, low wattage one. Usually when you start going over the wattage rating, they will get to hot and a thermal fuse will blow rendering the transformer useless, i've had other transformers fail in more spectacular ways from over loading though. A portion of the winding insulation melts and shorts out, transformer in turn starts getting even hotter, and next thing you know you have hot molten insulation blowing out the transformer and sparks going all over the place.
