Is anyone running the MT Baja Claws radials? I want to try these tires out in a 35x13.5. How do these perform in mud? Sand? Rocks? I'm not worried about snow because I live in AZ. How are they on the street? Wear characteristics? Any help is greatly aprreciated! I know I have tons of questions and I'm sorry. This is an 87 f250 w/6"skyjacker lift. Thanx guys!
From what I've read/heard here's what I know:
Mud- pretty sucky, they don't clean themselves out very well
Rocks- I've heard they works really well in the rocks
Sand- also work well in this
wear- ???????
Baha Claws are all junk... they look really cool because theyre different...but for mud theyre useless. I had almost bald all terrains that did better in mud. If you had a high horse power ride that could spin them fast enough, they might clean out better...but my PSD doesnt have the RPMs to clean em out. Looks like theyd be good for rocks though. As for wear, the radials are fairly soft from what Ive seen and didnt last very long for me. Check out the 4x4 magazines for comparisons...theyll tell you to go with BFG's or GY's...
Oh by the way, I can prove I have an unbiased oppinion because I was given the claws for free. (I know now it was for a reason)
They are not junk, you just have to use them for the right application. They aren't sold as mud tires, they are sold for rockcrawling and general off road terrain. They are absolutely amazing tires if you use them for the right thing, and if you know how to use them.
They are great on hardpack, loose dirt, sand, and of course rocks. They are meant to be aired down... that's how they work. I ran them last year on my F250 (still have them) and I was able to cruise up ridiculously steep sand dunes and hills, over slick boulders, and through MUD with no problem. I ran at pressures from 4psi to 10psi.
I can see how they would suck in slick clay mud though, they would probably pack up between the treads. But for the same reasons you don't run a street tire off road, you don't run Claws in gumbo mud. You have to match a tire to the terrain. I've gotten stuck in the same mud with BFGs and others, so my opinion is biased (based on actual experience).
You might want to check out a set of Kumho's. We are running them on several trucks and they really perform well. They have prety good street characteristics for a mud style tire, they climb rock better then anything else but the claws, and they are priced right.
You might have to do an internet search to find a dealer, they are not everywhere yet, but the company has been in the high performance tire (including rally stuff) for decades. We love them and would never switch to another tire again.
For an added benefit, try siping the center tread. These things will stick like super glue!
Just got some brand new Baja Claws and took it out for the weekend. Those tires are sweet for the stuff we were doing. The terrain over there is really soft dirt/dust, rocks, and ruts. They dig like no other. You could dig a ditch with those things if you wanted. I was impressed with them off road anyways.
