I have an NP435 tranny in my 76' F150(360). Currently it is 2wd. Does Ford make a Divorced Transfer case? Also, how hard would it be to bolt one to the drivetrain if i can't find a divorced? The tranny has recently been rebuilt so i don't want to change main shafts for a diff spline count. How hard of a job?? I know driveshafts will come into play, the guy before me had a prob w/ 4wd so i have the frnt axle and such, but definitely a 2wd tranny. Whatdoyathink?
Sure they did! My '73 F250 has a divorced NP205. I prefer divorced over married for a few simple reasons. First off, I don't need to touch the x-case to drop the tranny. When you've got a 120+ pound transfer case that's a pretty big issue. Also, this isn't as big a deal, but let's say you added an overdrive between your tranny and motor, or another range box between your tranny and x-case, then, with a divorced mount, you would only need to shorten your primary driveshaft rather than having to shorten your rear one and lengthen the front one.
The downside of a divorced mount is that it gives you a whole extra driveshaft to worry about. Two more U-joints, two more yokes, etc. If your into offroading, I recommend carrying an entire extra primary drive shaft while 'wheeling.
I would use the other chasis if possible. Swaping components would be much more work than any 2wd is worth. Put your motor and cab on a 4x4 chasis of your choice.
