I have an '85 f-250 that I am converting to 4wd. it has the 460 and a C6 tranny. The tranny has a few problems that I am working through due to sitting for 6 years, but I know that it ran great when it was parked so its gotta be something minor. I have explored the options of using a divorced transfer case, but I haven't had the best of luck with that setup in the past. how hard is it to convert a 2wd C6 to a 4wd C6, or can you? I've done it on a Chevy TH350 and it wasn't all that difficult, just change the tail section and output shaft. I really dont want to spend a ton of cash in getting a new tranny, but the n again I may be able to swap at a junk yard if it's not possible. ANy help would be GREATLY appreciated!!
i agree with nathan, buy a 4wd tranny, it will be cheaper in the long run, because you might as well rebuild or freshen up the unit while it is out. so if you add cost of output shaft and adapter housing, it will cost more to convert 2wd box.
Thanks for the help. I though that might be the easier way, but was hoping to save some coin by converting. Seems it will be more expensive in the long run.
About hou much did it cost to do? Did you get the parts from a junk yard C-6 or did you get them new? I haven't had time to start on it yet but I want to get everything in order before i begin so I won't have to keep running to the store every few minutes.
i honestly dont remember the cost the thing is to remember is keep every thing clean do not use diesel or kerosen to clean parts just buy new clutches a good shop manuel on overhauling a c-6 and thrust washers new filter and patience you will need two different kinds of snap ring pliars i personaly think a c-6 is easier than a t-18 or t-19 4 speed and to learn how a auto works is a pretty neat thing
so i will help where i can since you are not easily discouraged buy the mannual and read about this project first .
and dont get over whelmed
I agree that you ought to give it a shot. I haven't done it myself, but have helped several times and it didn't look nearly as difficult as I thought it might be. I figure that if you were to buy a junk-yard 4x4 tranny you will probably end up having to rebuild it pretty quickly anyway (that's my experience anyway). I just came across a great source for used parts, new parts, and all the info you could imagine. E-mail them at (mail@txchange.com). As was said earlier, it's just a matter of swapping the tailshaft housing and output shaft. Of course, the shaft is the most difficult part of the whole thing. I think my local NAPA store had all the parts for rebuild including all the bands and clutches for around $150. Hope this helps.
well man you are in luck. i just converted my c6 last night. Its not as simple as just swapping a tail shaft. firt you have to acquire a short tail shaft. then you basically have to disassemble the whole tranny to install it. i was lucky and I had a friend give me the short shaft. he said if i had to buy it it would have been about another $150. also once the tail cone is removed the only thing that replaces it is the transfercase it self
That can't be. I do know that the tail section for a 4wd is different than a 2wd tranny. I have found the shaft and tail section and negotiating a price for them. I'll keep everyone posted!!!
ole blue and fatforty, if you can get the part number off that transmission housing, i would appreciate it. that wpuld save me from havig to modify driveshafts and move crossmember.
thanks!!
the c-6 did have an adapter that goes between the tranny and the transfer case and ford only made two different length tail shaft for the four wheel drive long and the short the rear housing that bolts on the tranny if it is a short shaft the bolt on the bottom of the transfer betweeen the tranny and transfer case has to be put in the hole before you bolt the mount and crossmember to the tranny
back to the tranny there i san adapter it may not look like one but that piece that bolts to the tranny and covers the parking lock that is the adapter
