i hav an 86 3/4 ton diesel and need help choosing an exhaust i need a muffler and a good pipe diameter. i want a straight through muffler that wont make my engine crackle like a gas motor. can anyone point me in the direction of a good muffler? my motor is a 6.9 non turbo its bone stock

Your engine is not going to sound like the later model diesels, since it does not have a turbo. It will be very very loud with a straight through muffler, and will make a popping sound through the tailpipe under load. The diesel has so much compression it makes it very loud, and the turbos really smooth them out and make them quieter.

I don't know about a specific muffler for a diesel, but I just put a Flowmaster Super 40 and a Maremont M30001 3" mandrel bent tail pipe on my 5.0 and it made a huge difference in low-mid range torque and it sounds awesome.
Best part is I got the like new Flowmasters off of Craigslist for $30 (a pair) and the Maremont pipe is only $25.00 from Auto Zone.

No matter what you do, it's going to crackle like a gasser, 22.5:1 compression does that.
