after reviewing here on FTE 385 engine section, and on 460ford.com, its clear I'm an engine idiot.. for unported heads, I should have changed the cam to something with more duration(time) on the exhaust side to compensate.
and because of the stainless big valves, there is need of more spring pressure, SO.. when we had the heads off BOTH TIMES we needed to machine the spring pockets bigger .250 to accommodate the dual springs of the right part..
anyhow, we are shimming the current springs to add a little more pressure, but I won't be taking it back to the dyno to see the effect.. odds of me running this truck in the 5200 rpm or above range for any period of time are slim, but we might have made another 50 hp.. without head porting
hopefully the truck will be back together this week..
just curious... did you bring the extra carb with you or did they have one hanging around...
how much time did the 250 pay for
I agree with your cam remarks Everything I've ever seen said longer duration on the exhaust side... those are some pretty impressive numbers... I know you're happy

I arrived at 9am, left at 5pm. He had another carb there, so we tried that one. same with the 2in spacer..
pretty nice over all.. more than I'll ever use productively!..
Geez Sam, I was going to moan about my spending all day in the garage and showing tto no progress but somehow it seems trivial in comparison.
I'd hope that based on the causes of your grief, the shop would pick-up the hit for all the re-work.

yes, they ate all the rework.. we split the difference on the new pistons as they had to be replaced anyhow because of the impact damage, and I wasn't willing to let them do the flycut work. So the second rebuild cost me only another $80 for 1/2 the piston difference (over the stock replacements)(($260-100)/2) (early post said $120.. I bought some exhaust gaskets, thread locker and gasket sealer too)
I don't know the outcome of the spring spacer work yet, and I may have to eat that. (wrong springs for the valve weight, but they should have known that)..
Hopefully I will get it back today, and start re-assembly AGAIN to get it back in the truck.
Wow! impressive numbers. It sounds like its all coming together for you and that you have learned alot from the whole experience. I know it started out as a tragedy but it seems to have worked out really well for you in the long run (although I can imagine there were quite a few curse words floating around there for awhile)
Good luck on getting it back in the truck.............don't scratch anything!!!
Bobby
thanks Bobby. we took the front clip off to get the engine out, so it will be easier to get the engine back in too. then reassemble the truck around it.
She's Alive!. started right up.. course I lost the throttle return spring, and the alternator doesn't for some reason, so I've got another couple days til I can drive her around the block again..

I found the throttle return spring.. hanging from the brake line up inside the chassis!!..
As I have said in the past anyone can make chevy go fast but it takes talent to make a Ford go fast. Sdetweil looks like you had to school them. You treated them more than gentlemanly. Can I use that word in this forum? I can smell that rubber burning as this is being read or is it darksiders burning someone in effigy. LOL
