sometimes I wonder

SO, I have finally got my beast running, break in ok, and one trip around my 1/8 mile block!!!!... but the power brakes didn't have power. the check valve was broken..(stuck).. replaced, and last sunday morning went to start it up for another trip around the block to hear, ping, ping, clank.. and the engine no turn anymore..

well, well.. of COURSE not..

Sam

brand new parts.. you never know!

I guess it ruined the piston, too? That is bad luck, but like Havi says, shake it off and get it back on the path!

piston doesn't look bad at all. A few scratches.

I'll take the head back to the machine shop that did the work last year.
This was a new lifter, pushrod, rocker, valve/seat/guide/spring assembly.

not clear why yet.. no obstruction obvious.. they did have an assembly problem a year ago, bent a hardened pushrod cause it was 'too small' (5/16) for the 3/8 guideplate slot and the roller rockers.. but they don't remember which cylinder it was. that could have been the cylinder and that might have tweaked that valve. bending a hardened pushrod ain't easy. (they did it twice before ordering the large pushrods for the guideplates on the head already) I did not check compression before start up.

Its an intake valve, so its not heat related. we did bore this out to 2.25/1.72 largest valves possible. But now I know/remember why it is idling so rough.. went from 2.08 to 2.25 intake.. haven't adjusted the carb for that!..

No need to shoot now.
There is a TV Show on in the morning that preportedly has something to do with the News, though mostly it's about Talking Heads and such - anyway they do this thing at the end of the show about what they learned today.
I've been thing that maybe we ought to have perodic reports from our distinguished members as well as the rest of us on what has gone right and or wrong and why.
Your popped valve could be any number of things from material failure to the Great Human Fubar.
Maybe we can bring some of the Job One Quality Assurance to our little band of grease slingers - than again-----
Have your people get in touch with someone elses people and get things moving.

Bummer man!

If it was all clear sailing everybody would build a show truck.

Better luck in the future...

The machine shop thinks its repairable.. we'll see.. course it will screw up the paint!...

One interesting point, the new pistons, in 2-4 have some carbon deposit.. 1 is perfectly clean.. like it never had a good ignition cycle..

as I said before, I never checked compression (it was rebuilt of course!)..

well, we found out why, and I'm pissed.. quality ...

we cut the biggest valves, 2.25, new pistons, bearings, etc..

well, guess what.. the wrong pistons were used, or the valve relief isn't big enough.. all intakes have been banging on the pistons.. by around 1/4 inch (2.25-2.08).. each piston top shows the impact area

so all intake valves are trash. and maybe the new roller rockers..

I have to pull the engine to have it repaired.. so I have to pull the front clip again..
