Hello all
I have a 72 f100 with 390 bored 30 over w/cj heads. How much nitrous can a stock bottom end handle . Loooking to start drag racing.
It's not typically HP that kills an engine, it's RPM. I would think you would be good to about 500hp total. So if your engine is making 300 now, I wouldn't be too worried about a 200 shot. If your bottom end is in good shape you should be able to spin it to about 6000 tops. These are guesses though. Nobody knows what your engine can take. My suggestion would be to start with 50 and move up carefully.
Now you have to factor in other things. When you shoot nitrous you are increasing cylinder pressure, so detonation becomes an issue. If your engine is already on the edge of ping, then you can't shoot any nitrous. You would have to run higher octane fuel. You also have to make sure your fuel system can keep up with demand. Timing will have to be adjusted, spark plugs may need to be changed, etc...
Nitrous is a very effective and inexpensive way to make serious HP, but it is also a very effective way to injure your engine if you don't do your homework. I use it, and have never been bitten by it, but like a snake, I handle it with respect.
sorry for not getting back before now. Yes I do have forged TRW pistons, Thanks for info looking to start with a small shot and work up,with the max being 150-175 for now.
