Transmission Debate

A friend of mine who has a 97 f350 with the 7.3 was telling me how "one of the owners" of ats transmissions told him the transmission in the 97 is the best transmission ever and the torqshift is weak. I was under the impression the 5r110 is the superior transmission to have. Is there any truth to his claim and am I missing something? Does anyone have any data or specifics on this matter?
By the way, his transmission just failed and he had to get a remanufactured one.

Man, I think he is pulling your chain. I would just laugh and ask how his tanny is now.

you will find that with alot of people. the torqueshift put a bad taste in people mouth early in the game but from what i have seen they have been real reliable.

stock vs stock, the torqshift is a MUCH MUCH MUCH better transmission than the 4R100 (E40D) stock vs. stock the 7.3 seems to be a more reliable engine, however the number one complaint with 7.3 owners was the weak stock tranny.

once they have built either one is quite capable. but to answer your question, there is no way in hell that the 4R100 is a better tranny than the 5R110

I had serious snap ring issues with my 2004, first tranny 14K second tranny 15K third tranny 15.5K. Also several solenoid, gear issues. Ford would not give me a new one they had to rebuild it every time (took 10 days each rebuild). I made ford do a buy back after the second failure.

Did you have a fuel box type tuner like a Banks? This is the first time I've ever heard of a buyback from a transmission issue.

thats odd, because it the same problem kept happening they were not repairing it correctly or something, the reason the came apart was the grove was made wrong in the shaft thus allowing the snap ring to break. so if the put in the updated shaft and ring it should have been all set.

Yes the first rebuild I had the Edge, the second one stock and the third rebuild (so called updated parts) the service manager was driving it after I traded it in. They said something was wrong with the case and Ford refused to replace it. The dealer told me that after that they sent it to the auction to dump it. I am very happy with my 2005, whole different truck.

edge juice ended the life of my stocker too, but instead of a stocker replacement i went with a beefed up torqshift and an a/m converter. i have since thrown the edge in the trash and gone sct.

30,000 HARD miles on my new torqshift and not a single issue.

The last I knew he will send you all the custom tunes you want but be patient w/ him as he take a few days to get back to you some times.. yes that is the price if you pay for the CUSTOM SCT, not the preloaded w/ generic files.
Hey Hangon2me, where did you get the EGR plate? Is it just for the exhaust side or can you get one for the intake as well?? That would be far superior if the cooler were to leak..

This is for the exhaust side, if the EGR is disabled it wont open (we hope). I guess it would be a good idea to block off the intake some how. Here is a link for the pipe http://www.elitedieseleng.com/engine60.htm
