That depends. If you have a CA truck or Excursion, then yes. The GPCM is designed to throw a fault code for a bad glow plug. If you don't have one of those, and you have a GPR, then no, it will not set the CEL.
trcuk is new to me, 02 f250 ,sold new texas ,i'am ca. last weekend 34 to 36 de.
wouldn't start sicled gp's 3 4 times , would pop like 1 cyclender fired. a lot of white smoke took about 1hr to start, get home 45des starts right,
Sounds like a few bad plugs. Time for a tune up. I would ohm the plugs to see how many aren't working and go from there. F350-6 Chris has the picture or which wires to ohm and what they sould read.
have had truck for about week and half maybe 1k on oil checked was full,
now in shop for tranny and front cv jount, ex warrinty will not cover glow plugs, me and dealer about to goround and round on this one
You can test the GPR for power. I don't think it is glow plugs though. What is the temp where you are. It was 63 here this am when I left for work. My truck started right up. Turned the key and go. I did'nt wait for anything.
also told shop if dealer or warrty will not cover then i will do this at home, with a little help from FTE !!! don't know if it has gpr or gpcm, should get it back first of next week
going on hunting trip next week end for two weeks
Mid 30's the GP will fire. Mid 40's the GP may. If they won't fix it then we'll walk you through it. They should though, hell you only had the truck a very short time!
If it's a Texas truck, there's a good chance some glow plugs are bad, or the GPR is shot and nobody cared. They're not as important down here as in other parts of the country.
First off, lets figure out which system you have. Here's a pic of the GPR
The slightly larger relay that looks the same and is right in front of the GPR is the AIH. Look at the 2 big posts on the GPR. The one with the rubber boot on it should have power all the time. When the truck hasn't been started overnight on a cold morning, the 2nd big post will have power immediately after the key has been turned on for 1 - 120 seconds. (don't pay attention to the wait to start light, it isn't in time with the GPR)
You can have someone turn the key to the on (not start) position while you hold a volt meter to the 2nd big post and see if your GPR is sending power to the glow plugs. If not, try holding a screwdriver across the 2 large posts for 45 seconds and see if the truck starts better this way. If it does, then you need to spend $30 - $35 for a new GPR.
To OHM the glow plugs, there is a flat 9 pin connector on the inboard side of each head. Unplug the connector and use an OHM meter to check for resistance. Here's a picture of the 9 pin connector with the valve cover removed so you can see the connector on the inside of the valve cover and the wires in there
The 9-pin plug is wired as follows:
G G I I C I I G G
G=Glow Plug +
I = Injector +
C= Injector Common
To check glow plugs Test between "G" and battery ground. Should be between 0.6 and 2.0 Ohms
This means place one lead from your OHM meter on the center pin, then check the outside 2 pins on the left, and the outside 2 pins on the right of each plug. Note the resistance of each of the 4 pins on both the driver and passenger side. This should tell you if you need to replace your glow plugs.
chris and jim thank you ,looks like i have gpr will get truck back next week, tue or wed
