Help removing pulley on PS pump

I've read several threads that talk about installing the pulley and using the correct tool. How is the pulley removed? Just a standard bearing/pulley puller? Any tricks to it? My pump starts out just fine but once it gets warmed up it sounds like hell and actually starts to fade on it's ability to work so I am going to replace the pump.

The pulley is interference fit. It requires a special tool to remove. Like f250hiboy said, you can rent the tool from Autozone. The power steering pulley puller tool looks slightly different than a standard pulley puller. I went ahead and bought my own and I think it was around $30 or so. Even with the correct tool, it takes a while to work the pulley off the shaft, but it will come off little by little. When you put the pulley on the new pump, be very careful that it goes on in the right direction. If you put it on backwards, it will be impossible to remove it because the puller jaws will have nothing to grab.

Make sure you get the PS pulley tool that both removes and installs the pulley. You don't just want to drive the pulley on w/ a BFH or you run the risk of damaging the pump. If you use a std pulley/bearing puller to remove the pulley you will ruin the pulley, don't ask me how I know:-( To prevent your new pump from wear and noise, install a PS fluid filter in-line on the inlet side of the pump.

If I remember correctly, all that's required to install the pulley on the pump is a bolt, nut and washer which many new pumps come with. Torquing the bolt slowly works the pulley back down onto the shaft. The bolt them comes off when you're done. My pulling tool came with them as well.

Just curious are talkin about something like a remote Oil filter just hook to to return line of the power steering or a specific power steering filter? Honestly never thought about that but does seem to be a good Idea

Am replacing my PS pump tomorrow morn can purchase the tool from Advance here for $28 but think I will rent it from Auto-zone, just don't think I would use it enough to buy one.

I bought a 5/16" Magnafine AT Filter online (eBay) from a place called Technical Alternatives for $18.50 + S&H.

I did a quick search and I found them at JC Whitney:

When I bought a new ps pump for my 73 F100 at AutoZone, the guy working at AutoZone removed the pulley from my old pump and installed it on the new pump.

UPDATE! It was a breeze to swap the pulley out. I already had the pulley remover too! I had forgot I even had it. I used my air wrench to remove it and then I used a ratcheting boxed wrench to install it. The trick I found was spraying the pulley and the shaft with silicone spray then install the pulley. It went on without any problems at all. Thanks everyone for your input. I finally have the truck cleaned up somewhat and on the road. I will post pictures when i download them off my camera.
