hi guys, sorry if this is a noob question, but just trying to learn. i have a 1995 f250 with a 351. i was wondering what the point of the idler pulley is on this truck since it has an a tensioner pulley as well? Also the idler pulley on my truck is pretty worn
(rub marks on it and not smooth or perfectly round anymore) and as of about a week ago i started hearing a high pitched squeal under acceleration. should i assume that the squeal is coming from that pulley and that the bearing has gone bad? what if i ran the truck without the idler pulley on it? thanks for any info.
The point of the idler pulley is so that the belt can be properly routed around the drive pulleys. If you have a bad bearing it will seize and destroy the belt.
However do not assume anything. Take the belt off and rotate all the pulleys by hand. Feel for any roughness or noise. Check all the pulleys for end play. It more than likely is the idler but better to be sure. If it is it you should replace it as soon as you can.
