this is an actual hardware issue, lucky its still under warranty
And a pretty common one. My wifes toshiba has to be taken in ( we have a local toshiba repair shop) about once a year for this issue. Surprisingly it's not the cpu it's a dust problem.

Linux is great but the fact is that it doesn't suit the needs of the vast majority of computer users who only care about IE, the occasional game, and maybe MS word.
The game is the only thing stopping it in that case.
Word processing and internet surfing can be done on a lot of even dead os's. Since I have seen on more then one occassion, people get their MS pc's screwed up from games, it makes sense to have a dual boot system.
But nobody can show/inform anyone with a closed mind. Once they get tired enough of the same problems, and start opening up to different idea's, that is when the shock hits.
It depends on the environment it's in. When she was in school and it traveled with her it would overheat after about that amount of time. We'd just wait until it was shutting down after about 5 minutes of runtime to take it in.
