This is my first post so help me out if I have messed up.... I have 2001 F250 extended cab 4x4 7.3 PSD, AT. I am wondering how much trouble it is to install the larger 6.0 transmission cooler in my truck. Does it fit? or are there modifications required. Would it be better to add an auxillary cooler to the stock one? Are there any thoughts out there????? I have several trailers that I tow, up to and including a 30' fifth wheel. I just recently (last thursday) installed a Mag-Hytech pan, and am still having overheating problems when pulling loaded trailers. Thanks
The 6.0 tranny cooler is alot bigger and I think its a must for anyone who tows. I put one in along with a 6.0 intercooler. Most people on here say it helps alot, I dont yet have a trans temp gauge so I cant tell you the difference in temps, Im sure someone will chime in though. The instalation is pretty easy, pulling the bumper is really all you need to do, and some hose and fittings.
Welcome to FTE. The Mag-Hytech pan are nice looking but the 6.0 cooler will cool your tranny down much, much more than the pan. It's a shame that you already got the pan on because I would advise you to return it and simple install the 6.0 cooler.
I recently purchased a $3900 John Wood Towmaster transmission. HIS recommendation was to go with the 6.0 cooler. I am glad I did; it appears that the 6.0 is almost 3 times larger than the stock 7.3 cooler. My trans temp gauge (and others) goes in this weekend so I will have actual numbers but there is little doubt that this is one of the best bang-for-bucks mod we can do for our trucks.
I have pics of my 31-row 6.0L cooler install in my gallery.
There were a few different coolers used in the 6.0L; all were larger than the stock 7.3L cooler, but the 31-row is the biggest. It bolts right in, but you need an adapter to connect the larger hoses from the 6.0L cooler. BTS transmissions has a conversion kit for $25 that makes it simple.
I just completed the install of the 6.0 cooler 2 weeks ago. I got mine from BTS. he sells the entire kit including the hoses, elbows clamps etc. no need to run out getting parts. I went with BTS because i have limited time to gets things like this done so i had it all ready to go. The biggest pain is getting the old one out. I have a tranny guage and it used to run close to 160-170 on a 80degree day now its down to 120 ish. (non towing) I tow a 13k lb toy hauler and went with this cooler for the same reason. Im taking it out to sturgis SD next year and i didnt want any cooling issues along the way etc. And i think the tranny seems happy too. Its the best bang for the buck. BTS will help you with any questions also is you need them. Brians Truck Shop jeff
Ive installed PILES 6.0 coolers (with BTS trannys mind you) and 2 pans. both pans on trucks with 6.0 coolers. You can add more fluid to the trans that will take longer to heat up. But it will also take longer too cool. Add more cooling to the fluid and your temps will come down faster. The pan is nice on an obs because of the drain. But thats about it.
