I bet your code will be "incorrect gear ratio in 3rd" and the intermediate band is broke.
The only "non internal" problems it could be is a broken intermediate servo piston or a blown out valve body gasket, but I have seen way more broke bands.
The way you can tell if the band is broke is to see how far the band adjustment screw will screw in. If it turns more than 3 turns its broke.
The intermediate band adjustment screw is on the driver side closest to the rear of the trans, above the manual linkage. Loosen the "3/4" jam nut and turn in the "15/16" square headed screw.
