I have a 1996 Explorer XLT and has two strange things happening.
Issue #1: my "check engine" light comes on for no apparent reason. I had my O2 sensor replaced about 6 months ago, they said that was the cause of it illuminating. Well, it still happens. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Issue #2: the exterior temp guage displays wrong readings. On an 85 degree summer day, it'll display -10, ice. Sometimes the letters "OC" are displayed. Is it the chip? Can I replace it? How much does this cost?
For the first item you need to read the codes stored in the computer. That will lead you in the right direction for the CEL.
For no. 2. check the connection for the temp sensor. It is located on the radiator support behind the grill. On a 65 to 85 deg. day the resistance value of this sensor should be 8,000 to 14,000 ohms. Beyond this the tests are too complex for me to try and copy here. They are available in the factory manuals from Helminc.com.
