Overhead Trip Computer

I own a 1999 F250 Powerstroke. I need to replace the trip computer/compass. I checked with the dealer and they want $500. That includes the computer and the overhead consloe. I don't need the console but they sell it as a package. Anyone out there have a cheaper option?

Thanks,
Ladderdawg

I'd think its time for a Cabela's dash mount......or fill in your aftermarket compass supplier . I don't think the overhead compass is all that useful, the trip computer surely is not. spend the $500 on a full nav system before the overhead computer.

Welcome to FTE Ladderdawg. The reapair is very simple to do. It took me about a 1/2 hour from pulling it out to reinstallation.

Yup. Just fix the one you have. It's simple.

Just don't be ham-fisted with the soldering iron.

If you're not good with one, get the local ham radio operator involved. He'll likely be glad to help.

Overhead Trip Computer

I have this same problem with my computer board in my 2000 F350 and also called around and found the whole assembly for 500 bucks. My Dad and I have been looking for a little while and just found this website, I haven't ordered anything from them or even called yet cause I'm trying to fix it myself first. Sorry I don't have more info for everyone, I'll post again if I find out anything more.

Does this take a certain level of expertise to solder the chips back on? It's the only part I can't figure out. I already ruined mine trying to fix it myself but I have a friend who will give me his that is broke and I don't want to ruine this one to.

I've never done this before and when I sodered the chips back on I put to much soder on the chips so they touched each other and I ended up blowing the fuse for the dash cluster. Put a new one in and nothing else was damaged. Not sure if I ruined the board or not. Sorry I couldn't be more help..

I didn't even need to add any solder, just heat it up with the iron.

What kind of iron did you use? Mine is a small gas one with different tips for it.

For circuit boards you really need a needle tip electric soldering iron. You can buy a cheap one for about $10. Use small diameter rosin core solder, and an old typewriter eraser works good for cleaning the board before you try to solder it.
