I have an '88 F-350 with Dana 60 reverse in the front. (Solid of course.)
"The axle shaft appears to be loose. I can wiggle it at the u-joint (up and down, not in and out), but the wheel itself seems to be tight."

I have the same problem with my U-Joints and when I am in four wheel drive my front axle makes pretty nasty sounds.
I have not been driving my truck for quite some time because of an engine problem. I'm putting a better conditioned 460 in it but i'm rebuilding the new one before it goes in, so my truck will be off the road for awhile.
I was wondering if anybody knew what is wrong and what needs to be replaced.. and if possible how?
I don't do much with axles. The most I have done is change my rotor when my brakes went out. (Which I may add was the worst looking rotor I have seen in my life.)
Any help appreciated.

That thuur is a perrrrty rotor.
Didnt even occur it was bad untill it destroyed a caliper and my brakes went out.
With mine, it was definitely the spindle bearing. Not sure about on an '88, but on my '93 axle, other than not having the locknut tool, it was pretty easy to get apart.
