They will probably fit but will balloon out. They could also develop a hop as the tread won't be allowed to sit flat. I'd suggest going with at least an 8.5" rim.

I don't know how different 17s should be, but I run 315s on 8" wide 16s and they fit very well. Really though you should probably stick with a 295 or maybe a 305.

The 285 would fit a lot better if you don't have a lift or leveling kit.

He said he has a lift. So he can go with 315's he just needs wider rims. If it is a daily driver I would go with a 9 inch rim, so they are not ballooning and you will get better tread wear.

How big is your lift? That is a key factor in how big of tire you need. If you have 3 inches or more I would go with 315. If is 2 inch leveling kit go with 285, 295 or 305. They are all pretty much the same just a 305 is an inch wider, 305 you might need a wider rim also.

I think the Toyo would be perfect for what you want to do. I wish I had gone that route.

I have 295 on a 7.5" width wheel and it works fine, but the 285 (in my opinion) would fit better on the wheel and is taller than the 295/70/17 I bought.

That would be a good size and a great tire.
