PCM Reflash

I took my F-450 in to Ford service to day for the RAD leak. Wile I was there I asked about the PCM REFLASH. Nobody new what I was talking about. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to trust these guy's if they have no idea what I'm talking about. The service rep said if there is nothing wrong with the PCM then there is no reason to flash it. I replied asking about any updates that may have done, again if it's not broke why flash it. I am left one 2 choices. Look for another Ford dealer or deal with these guy's.

Tell them there is something wrong with it. You have tons of choices...

It surges while braking to a stop sign/red light while in regen.

The cruise control 'floors' the engine when resuming.

The dash doesn't indicate when it goes into regen mode.

My local dealer gave me crap too at first, but then gave in. Unfortunately, they realized after I dropped off the truck that they didn't have the latest calibrations yet. I got it flashed the next day by a much bigger dealer 50 miles away.

I was one of the lucky ones who saw my MPG go back up. I say "back up" because when we got the truck brand new, we were averaging 14mpg. Then we got TSB 07-17-3 PCM flash in Sept of 2007, and the mpg went to 11.6mpg.

Now it is averaging 14-15mpg after TSB flash 08-13-2... and we've put a lot of tanks of fuel in it so it seems pretty consistent. This is all city/hilly rural driving. Barely any highway.

I had reflash done 3 week ago and not happy that I did it. My truck goes into regen about every 150-200 miles. Before it was regen maybe every 1000-1500. Posted a earlier message asking folks about their expeniences. My truck was Job 1 which I'm not sure matters or not. My mileage with new reflash did not improve one bit, partly because it regens more often now.

Wow! I wouldn't be happy either.

Ours regens every 200-300 miles since brand new. Never been happy about that I'm waiting for mine to crack and get a replacement. Hopefully ford has newer more efficient DPF's... doubt it though.

I don't know guy's I've never noticed this regen happen to me. It must be happening but I never noticed it doing what all of you describe. One thing I notice is there is like a small motor running from time to time. But no lose of power. The noise is almost like something is vibrating. Then it goes away. Someone told me it was the engine returning unburned diesel back to the tank. That person must not have known what he was saying.

Alot of dealers dont realize the most current reflash is not on the current VCM disk even thow it states in in the recent TSB. They have to patch in to get it online.

The easyest way to see if your in regen to tap the brake while your stoped. If the engine returns to Idle and come right back up after you let off the brake the engines in regen. The noise your hearing is the EGR valve cycling thru the regen cycle.

So it is going through the regen cycles. Cool at least I know what that humming noise is now. Thank you.

My truck is a Job # 2 with build date of 08-15-07. I have never noticed a regen, and never seen a message. I have however, noticed similar sounds as stated above. My truck hasn't had a PCM reflash since new (build date).

If my truck goes into Regen, shouldn't I get a message on the message center?

A message may flash across there... you'll have to push the "SETUP" button on the dash then it will say "press RESET to start" to get it to show if it is in regen or not (it will go through a whole system check, regen cycle is the last one). It will only display the message if you do a lot of stop and go and it needs to complete the cycle (at least that's what happens in my truck). Should say "Drive to Clean Exhaust Filter" or something like that.

My truck is a Job 3.

Slightly off topic, but I just got the DashDaq/Spartan tunes.... before I loaded the tunes I drove the truck about 400+ miles with just the DD unit on there monitoring the stock system. When your truck is in regen, EGT's are 800+ at idle. Tell me that isn't bad for the turbo (especially if you shut the truck down)!! And then when you start your truck back up, it has to warm back up and start back where it left off. Can you say "horrible gas mileage, Batman"?

I got flashed 2 weeks ago. During regens now a message "cleaning exaust filter" is displayed during the entire regen. Pulled 8000# 500 miles this week through mountain passes and regend 2X. 8.4 mpg avg, hand calculated. .2 mpg difference from display. I dont have to press setup.

Strangely I've seen the message pop up, then disappear, then I had to press Setup and Reset button to check to see if it finished. Last week, it went into regen and message stayed on until it was done.
