ok, i had a misfire in my '99 sport OHV 4.0. i took out the bosch platinums and put standard autolites in. i've noticed a drop in mileage since i put the regular autolite plugs in, and a friend of mine told me this ignition is too hot and will burn them up quick. do i need to go back to a platinum? i'm looking at autolites again, but do i want regular platinums or double platinums?

I've been running single plats in 4.0l since 95' and they can last quite a while and work great. Doubles are not required, but shure don't hurt. Stay away from bosch plugs, they suck. MC or Autolites work well. I posted a link that exlains the 4.0l "Waste Spark" ignition. IMO its sort of a half assed ignition but it works. http://rockledge.home.comcast.net/~r...y/DIS_EDIS.htm
You can think what you want about the system, the reason Ford used it is because you get a 40,000 volt system regardless of RPM within the design specs. With other systems, you either have to have individual coils (expensive), or you loose voltage as RPM increases.
Double platinum is what Ford specifies, the only reason they didn't do it from the factory, is because they have buying power that allows them to save money by using a specific type of single platinum, with different plugs on each bank. You the consumer will not save any money buy cutting corners on spark plugs and deviating from what Ford specifies right in the owners manual (that book that comes with every car, but that almost no one reads.)
Ford also recommends 100k miles spark plug changes. On most vehicles they sell plugs won't last 100k before a misfire occurs. Also not a good idea to leave plugs in aluminum heads for 100k miles either. I'll use singles and change them every 50k or so. If plug type was absolutely crucial on this type of system Ford would have spent the money on Doubles from the factory, because they had no other choice.
You should be able to leave the plugs in the heads providing anti seize was used when they were installed, which I'm sure the factory doesn't do. With the price of gas what it is, if I start losing 1-2 mpg, I start replacing tune up items.

Anti-seize shure does help, however it disapates over time do to constant heat/cool cycles. Yep, no anti-seize from Ford the stock plugs squealed like a pig on the way out.
