Im new to site and looking for help with problem.I have 2005 F-350 superduty at 56,000 miles noticed the smell of coolant burning and my fan running when towing trailer.Dealership changed oil cooler and egr about 5,000 miles later noticed it again this time dealer sad the cap was not holding pressure.I now have 68,000 miles noticed burnt coolant smell and fan running while towing took lt back again and they changed the oil cooler and egr again.I dont know alot about diesels and just need help understanding why this is happening. It seems like they should have fixed it the first time.
EGR cooler and oil cooler should be changed at the same time. Chances are that your EGR cooler is plugged. Install a coolant filter and then see if the coolers go out again. Some 6.0's had a lot of casting sand left in them. My 1st coolant filter plugged up in 300 miles.
Did they change your EGR "valve" or EGR "cooler"? Do you have any mods?
Ford has very specific procedures and tests listed in the workshop manual to determine the source of coolant puking and overheating. They also know what 69cj mentioned - change both the oil cooler and EGR cooler if the EGR cooler is leaking. I bet they checked your degas cap the first time. In fact, they should change the cap out every time you have puked coolant.
I would start asking around and see if there is another dealership close by with a good reputation for repairs. It is possible you have head gasket issues. Do you see any white residue under the hood around the degas bottle? Do you hear any whistling while towing (like air blowing over a coke bottle)? Do you see any white smoke while towing?
This last time they put a new cap and bottle along with the egr and oil cooler. They said they tested the headgasket and that they are fine. The problem is it normally does it when pulling a load, the fan never kicks on when im just driving the truck only when pulling trailer.the thing is my trailer is 16 feet and only loaded with scaffold and planks and should not even be close to a heavy load for this truck.
bismic's right... I just went through this a month ago. I had confidence in my dealership. The truck was in twice. First time I was losing coolant and they replaced the EGR cooler. About 2 weeks later we were pulling our trailer up to Meadow lake and the cooling fan was on all the time, mileage was in the toilet and it was puking coolant like a fountain. We limped back and I took the truck in straight away. The problem shows up only under load. Unloaded it drives normal. This time they changed the oil cooler and tested a lot of different things. They kept the truck for a week, but it seems to be fixed. Power and mileage are back and I'm getting 14.2 mpg while towing 8400 lbs. I'm keeping a real close eye on my coolant and thinking I'm not done with this yet. Next will be the heads I'll bet.
Hang in there. See if you can talk to the tech directly. I think it helps.
