I am looking to buy an Explorer or similiar type vehicle, and am trying to figure if I would be able to tow it behind a motorhome or not. Didnt know if it needs to be four wheel drive so I could put the transfer case into neutral. If so how do you do that. Went and looked at an Eddie Bauer tonight and there is no neutral position on the switch on the dash. Thanks for the input.
There was/is some modification to the TC to be able to flat tow.
What I would do is go with a tow dolly & a front wheel drive Escape or similar.
Besides, read through the threads. While there are plenty of trouble-free Exploders, you really can't prove it from the posts here. Then look at the Escape forums. ("How do you set the presets on the radio?" is as common as blown trannies on the Exploder site)
Too bad you're not in So Cal, as I know where there is a '98 xlt 4x4.....
most of the newer EXP are full time 4 x 4 and you can not turn it off. You would need to get the front end off the ground. i would look for a 2 x 4 version, or the smaller Excape is a good idea.
If it is four wheel drive and not all wheel drive and a four door you can tow it. I have towed three so far. on my 95 I used a drive shaft disconnect from Remco. On my 98 and 2004 all you need it the neutral tow kit. If you go to MotorHome Magazine: Making your RV travels easier and look at their towing guide it will give the part number. The kit is a light that plugs in under the dash and they connect to the computer and enable the neutral tow. I just turn off the key with the selector in neutral and hold the 4wd auto button while pushing on the brake pedal for @5-8 seconds and then the light comes on and you are ready to go. I towed my 95 for 40,000 miles, the 98 for 55 thousand and this 04 for 38 thousand miles no problem. I do have aux brakes to help stop. I use M&Gengineering system. The system is a no probem solution.
Same for my 06, Ford dealer installed neutral tow kit, camping world installed base plate and brake system. No problems yet. Explorer must be 4x4 not awd. One thing to think about is that the Explorer is near the weight limit of most mh's for towing, make sure tow bar equipment is in good shape, inspect welds.
