If your tugging in flat country, over paved roads, no need to lug around the 4X4 running gear & a 4.0L 4X2 outfitted with the auto tranny & the payload & tow packages, is rated to tow more than a 4X4 equipped Ranger. More thoughts for consideration.

You can't flat-tow a 2 wheel drive Ranger. You'll burn up the trasnsmission.
They made the neutral tow kit for the older Rangers too. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same part number. But I suppose it could be different. I also heard that the kit was discontinued, but not positive.
If you get a Ranger with a manual-shift transfer case, you don't need a neutral tow kit. You simply shift the transfer case into neutral.
Thanks for waking me up, I think I may have misunderstood the OP's question. I thought he was talking about towing a load in flat country, not towing the Ranger with all 4 wheels on the ground, which you rightly point out is a whole nother subject.
Yes, I want to tow a 4x4 behind a motorhome. Do the older auto trans models have a neutral in the transfer case.
Yes. Like I said, if it's a manual-shift transfer case, you simply shift the transfer case into neutral. If it's an electric-shift transfer case, you need a neutral tow kit. This is true for all Ranger years.

Ok, Ford referrers to that as "Recreational Towing" & it's covered in the Owner Manual beginning on page 154. If you don't have a manual, one can be downloaded at no cost here. Owner Manuals | fleet.ford.com
Note if it's an Auto Tranny 4X4, additional things as noted in the Owner Manual "Recreational Towing" guide, need to be done when towing the vehicle with all 4 wheels on the ground!!!
