My engine stalls while decelerating It was suggested to me that the centifugal advance isn't returning all of the way and throwing off my timing. When I took off the stator assembly, I found that most of the play (~3/16") was in the shaft itself. How much play (if any) can be expected in the shaft? Could this cause a stall ?

Odie1, I don't think your stalling is an ignition problem. I would look at the carburator (if you have one, you didn't mention the year). Try adjusting the idle mixture screws along with the idle speed screw, and see if this helps.
