I just bought a 2000 F-350 Dually 2 wheel drive and it has a dead spot in the steering wheel (play), it is not bad but needs to be corrected.
I lifted the front end up and set it on jack stands. I checked the tires for play, none. I then got a pry bar and checked the ball joints, pitman arm, etc. Everything was tight. I then checked the steering column shaft, and it had lots of play. I don't know if the play is in the column or the steering box, I could not lock down the input gear since the air intercooler pipe is in the way
My question is, do these steering column shafts have issues like the Dodge ones, or is it safe to say Steering box?
I would say it's the gearbox. How many miles are on it? We have a group buy on the redhead steering gearbox that's about to happen next week on Tuesday, might want to get in on it.
I agree with the box, because when the vehicle was supported by jacks the only play I could find was when I rotated the steering column shaft and when I lowered the truck the play in the steering column went away. If the play would still be their when I lowered the vehicle than I would say column.
Thanks, I found the group buy and added to the list.
I had about a 20 degree (10 each way past center) total dead spot in my truck. 3/4 of a turn in of the adjuster on the steering box tightened everything up.
Thanks for the info, I know this is off topic, but I am new to the Powerstroke. I see in the sigs that most people have modified the CCV and I also see something about Hutch/Harpoon???? I don't want more power, but I like mods that improve cooling or engine life.
