Went to take off the passenger side rear wheel today, I think the first time since I got the truck. One of the lug nuts was particularly hard to remove for the entire length of the bolt. Turns out the whole thread is pretty badly stripped. After taking a look at the brakes I went to put the wheel back on and tightened the lugs. Well that was a mistake, because now the lug nut is about 1/3 the way down the bolt and spins freely, but is stuck. It won't go any further and it won't come back off.
Not too sure how to go about fixing this. Any ideas?
I should add that I had the truck at the mechanic a couple week ago for inspection (failed for other reasons) and he did not mention anything about the thread being stripped. About a month before that it was at Firestone getting new tires. Perhaps the young man operating the air tool had something to do with it, but then again it could have been my doing this morning. The nut was on pretty tight and I had to stand on the lug wrench a little.
sounds like you need a saw zaw or something to cut it off. Then you just take the wheel off and hammer the stud out. Replace with new one, they are cheap.
I doubt you had anything to do with that. Most likely someone used an air wrench with out hand starting the nuts. Even if the Mechanic removed the tire to inspect the brakes likely he/she would have just put the nut on and not notice the bad threads. If they did they wouldn't mention it to you as you would ask if they did it.
Can you get to the nut to cut it? or split it in half? Never had much luck hammering studs out - always removed the axle and used a press. Hammering on axles could damage the axle bearings - unlikely but still a warning
I remembered that my neighbor has one of those Sawzalls, so we gave that a try and it did just the trick. Then the remaining stud came out without problem. Got a replacement, and now the old truck's back in business. Thank you folks for the help!
yeah, just replace it....big hammer to get the old one out, $4 at autozone for a new one, put it in by hand, put wheel back on, use new lug nut to draw it home.
