You dump it the first time just for the reason that I said. It is cleaning up the inside of the engine. You can certainly send a UOA if you choose to do so. Here is what I have experienced. The first time I changed oil with schaeffer's it turned coal black just like many of the other oils out there. I dumped the oil at 5,000 and went to 10,000. It turned black around 3000 and sent in oil sample at 8000, because that is what I choose to do. Ever since then it takes longer and longer for the oil to turn. Ever sample I sent in told me I could extend the drain interval. My dad's 01 currently has 5000 miles on his second oil change and it not even turned the least bit. His first oil change it did. He is going to 10000 this time and will be taking a sample. His truck has 75000 on it and mine has 178000.
A stupid question-why the need to dump the first batch at 5,000? An analysis would be cheaper and give you data if you really were "cleaning up" the motor.
I think Jamie is just trying to save him the $9 on the oil analysis kit. Schaeffer's has a pretty stout detergent/additive package and more often then not the first run on Schaeffer's get changed around the 5K interval for this application. You can easily do the oil analysis along with it - I did. That way you can see the results in black & white.
Like Jamie's experience, mine is similair on my 7.3L. Each oil change my drain intervals went up on the UOA.

Every analysis I get back says I can extend the interval as well, but I don't run schaeffer's. Appearance is not a good indicator of the condition of the oil, or we wouldn't do analysis.
Im just curious, why would you do UOA and not extend the drain interval, if it tells you you can. The appereance of the oil is a very good indicator of how well the oil is performing under the certain conditions. I will agree that is does not tell the whole story, like wear metals and so forth, but still it shows that is not being broken down.

I typically drain at 10,000-12,000 miles, I guess that is the limit of my comfort zone. I have never had an analysis come back that didn't say try another 2-3,000 next time. The main problems with the oil in these engines are shear and add pack breakdown, and I don't think you can tell anything about those by visually appraising oil.
Clux,
You are making some very points. I am very well aware of the problems that oil can can have in these engines. There is probably no worse engine on oil than ours. That is the main reason I choose to run a quality oil in IMO. Others oils will work just fine in these motors as long as you have good maintance. And they all are great oils. I may have come across to you like I make all my decisions based on visual inspection. Well I dont. Its all based on factual information and not any other reason. An oil that does not look black as coal after the first five mins. of running it IMO is hell of a lot better than one that does. Maybe one day we will take a little time and talk about the differences in base oils, which is the main reason for the longevity of the oil. What ever oil you are runnin seems to be working great for you then you should stick with it.
Which Bryan, Texas are you in? The one North of Dallas or the one South? Either way they are both pretty close to the North Texas Powerstoke Rally on 3-5 Oct. Gonna be a blast........
I live in the South one by College Station... I didn't know there were two Bryans in TX. I am interested in the Rally I'll look into it a little more. Thanks for the heads up.
It's small, but there is another Bryan, Texas west of Fort Worth. You wouldn't have too far of a drive for the Rally. Gonna be folks driving in (towing campers) from St. Lious, east Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, etc. Folks like Luke Cline with his twin turbo 7.3L, T Wildman, Terry, Brian & Rusty. All running setups well over 450+ hp....
