Please Help !..NO POWER !

Ive got a 2000 excursion thats acting up on me, its got 117k on it. it starts up and idles strong. as soon as i put a load on it, it dies . ive changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump, yesterday it would go about a mile before it lost power and eventually shut down. today i put in a a new cam sensor and it went for about 15 miles before is started acting up ...any thoughts ?...any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Is the check engine light on? Have you pulled any codes?

I had very similar symptoms, my in tank pickup was clogged. The way that I finally figured it out I opened up my fuel filter bowl and removed the fuel filter then I drained the fuel out then I turned the key on and watched the fuel fill up the bowl, after about half way up I began having severe air bubble coming in, hence my truck would idle and drive for short distances or slow speeds but at higher rpms gained a miss and ran terrible. the fix is the hutch mod, click here. I pumped out all of the fuel from the tank, using the electric fuel pump (it can run down your batteries) and dropped the tank cleaned out two or three full hand fulls of junk ???? and did the hutch mod.

hope this helps, there are some kits out there available for the mod but I used brake line and a couple of fittings, the total cost about 25 bucks, but I already had a pre pump filter

Welcome to FTE. You've already gotten some good suggestions. To answer your other question, the crank sensor would be the CPS you already changed.

Go ahead and check your oil level. Make sure it's full, the proper type, and not too old. The fuel injectors run off your oil. Check your air filter while your under the hood.

Take a safe route and see if you can get the truck to die again. When it dies, turn the key off, coast to a stop (in a safe location) and remove the fuel filter lid. Tell us if the fuel bowl is empty, full, or somewhere in between.

Can you better describe how the truck dies? Does it surge and sputter or act like someone turned the key off? Do any dash lights flash when this happens? What does your tach and speedo do? Can you rev the engine in nuetral and get the truck to stall?

Wow!... i love this forum,.. thanks for all the input....i cant get the truck to stall when its in park or neutral,..sounds strong,.. the oil level is full and looks nice and clean,... i was unaware that there is an "in-tank" filter..i dont know too much about the strokers as i recently converted from the cummings,.(more kids and needed a bigger s.u.v. and wanted to stay diesel)..i've only had the excursion for a short time and i ran into this..also, my mistake, i chnged the crank sensor, not the cam sensor, would swapping the cam sensor out perhaps help ?... thanks everyone for all of thier input,.. i'm lovin it

there one in the same sensor,,real term is cam position sensor (CPS)..you would get the SES light if it was the cause..next time it stalls..do as Chris said..turn off key ASAP and cost to a stop...pull the filter bowl cover and see if its full,, if it isnt it could be the sceen inside the tank,,its not realy a filter..just a very fine screen.it could also be a weak fuel pump...its really hard to tell whats wrong..we can only guess with what little info we got...does it die like its running out of fuel? or just quit??

Also, put a new air filter in when i changed the fuel filter,,, it spits and sputters as it dies,.. goes for 5 minutes and then starts acting up,. if i sit and wait it out for a few minutes, then i can go another 5 minutes or so,. ive blown air back from the fuel filter into the tank and could hear the bubbling in the tank...i figured if a sensor was bad, it would throw a code. the first fuel filter i changed looked pretty bad and i was hoping thats all it was.

I was wondering if you were a Dodge guy when the first thing you try is changing the fuel filter & pump. There are little screens inside the mixing chamber (part of the fuel pick up assembly in the tank) that can get clogged. Here's a pic of a disassembled view showing the screens

Now let me add, that unless there is junk in your tank, it was run almost or all the way empty, or had some bad fuel in it, these screens are NOT a very common problem. I wouldn't go dropping the tank just yet until you get a better idea of what's wrong. If you decide to drop the tank, and it sounds like you're not scared of poking around at things, look into what we call the hutch and harpoon mods. As long as the tank is down this is something to consider. Especially if the clogged screens turn out to be your problem. Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

Since I don't like the idea of sending you off down the road to stall at an undetermined location, try putting the truck in drive, and with your foot on the brake, rev the engine. That should produce a little boost and put the engine under load. Just remember to shut the key off quickly since we have an electric fuel pump that will run and refill the bowl (and hide the evidence) if you leave the key in the on position.

awesome !.. is it a huge job to drop the tank ?..thats what my next move is... i believe bad fuel ( as in a 80% diesel/20% vegee oil) from the previous owner and thats why i'm stuck with it.. i bought the truck to put a greasecar kit in it as i already have one in my tdi and have gone a tons of miles on it....hhhmmm

Welcome to the club. dropping the tank is'nt too bad a job. it sound like your on target with the bad fuel mix. The veggie oil may be solidfying and your screen may be partially plugged.
