For about a year and a half I've had this rumbling noise up front when I'm hard in the gas, going up a long hill or towing the camper. It seems to go away after I get out of third gear. I've had the tranny checked out and it was fine but being my mechanic closed shop I went to a new garage and they said the front differential was the issue and quoted me $2200 to have it replaced. When I spoke to the owner I asked if he was sure that's what it was since he didn't look at it one of his mechanics did. He said bring it back in and he will look at it himself to make sure being a rather expensive repair. I'm not a mechanic by any means but I have a few questions; Does the price sound reasonable if it is the front differential and what kind of questions should I be asking to verify it actually is broken. If it fails altogether am I dead in the water or do I just lose the front wheels in four wheel drive mode
I had another mechanic go out on a test drive and he said it sounds like a bearing in the differential has a flat spot and not to worring about it unless I start hearing the noise all the time
