Speed sensor problems, need help Badly!Experts welcome.

Ok, I've been having problems with my shifting and speedometer. My speedometer doesnt move at all till about 40kms per hour, and then it flickers up and down very erratically. Once hitting the first shift in the automatic transmission it shifts about 2 seconds too late and someone "bucks" me. I read a prior post that said change the speed sensor in the differential which i did, and it did not help. So now I'm not sure what it is. I picked up a speed sensor for the transfor case, and went to check out the transfer case to find where it goes in and its nowheres to be found, so that can't be it. Had a mechanic friend look at it and he said that sensor in the rear end should be the problem, so I'm not sure whats going on?? Could there be rust or dirt underneather the sensor in the hole that may be blocking the sensor? Or maybe it is the wire that clicks into the sensor that is not working properly? Any help would be HUGELY appreciated as this problem is really starting to get to me, help please!

I would have your mechanic friend pull the cover off of the differential, sound to me like a bad tone ring.

Don't spray water in there. It goes straight into the rear end, and so all that water will get mixed with the grease, and it won't be pretty. It's a magnetic sensor, so dirt shouldn't affect it. At this point, I would suspect the wiring more than anything. You'll have to trace it somehow and see if you can find a point where there is a break or a short. Might also want to check the connection with the cruise control.

Scotty, what engine and year is this truck? If it's an AOD then there should be a speed sensor sticking out the side of the transmission.

its a 1993, F150, with a 302 motor. I already replaced the speed sensor in the rear end.

Auto trans or manual? If it's a manual then you probably don't have a speed sensor in the trans.....

If replace the sensor didn't fix it, it's gotta be in the wires, pull the dash apart and make sure the connector there is fully plugged in.....

good news, all fixed and shifting better then when i bought it, had my mechanic disable the abs computer, his words were " I over rided the abs computer" therefore taking away my abs breaks but thats fine with me, as long as it shifst nicely and the speedo works!
