Thinking about buying another truck. I have been looking and I see 3.73 and 4.10 rear ends. I am looking for fuel economy to drive to work but occasionaly I pull a 3200# boat. I don't know anything about rearends. I have a 3.73 now would a 4.10 make it better or worse?
Hi. I have a 3.73 and have no trouble pulling my 13k 15th wheel. A 4.10 or higher would make the pulling easier, at the expense of fuel mileage however I've never felt the need to go to a higher ratio, even in the Rockies. Mine is an auto trans; might be a different story with a manual....
What engine are you looking at getting? I know with the 6.0L diesel I've done a lot of reading and the 4.10s give better overall mileage than 3.73s because it requires less throttle around town to accelerate and gets the rpms in a better range at highway speeds. For the gassers I'd get 4.30s if you plan on towing often or might put slightly larger than stock tires on (like 285s). Otherwise I'd go 4.10s and maybe...maybe 3.73s if you get a diesel.
I'd get 4.10s, especially if you plan to step it up to slightly larger tires, 3.73s if you will remain all stock. Also, depends on what speeds you will run on the highway. If you want to run 65 with best economy get the 4.10s if you like to run 70-75 then the 3.73s will do better.
You could always re gear later, but the 3.73s do fine towing even with the ZF6 6 speed. If the vanes on the turbo are getting sticky though, youll notice it more on the 3.73s as the truck will be more sluggish until the turbo gets air moving well. 4.10s are great for towing frequently, but like has been said, fuel economy may suffer...
