I have a US model 95 Explorer - Eddie Bauer. Looking at the shop manual the other day, I saw that the Canadian version of the Explorer had mandatory daytime running lights. I like the idea of being more visible. Does anyone know what it would take to install the daylight running lights on my Explorer?
Daytime running lights have been mandatory in Canada for 10 years or so now. All ( I think ) vehicles with the running lite circuitry installed at the factory are set up so the lights run at half power when the headlight switch is turned off. This is supposed to extend the life of the lights and places a lighter load on the charging system as well. Anyway,,,there are several aftermarket manufacturers making daytime running light kits. I've seen them around when I'm looking for stuff for my truck but I can't think off any of the mfg's names off the top of my head. Try Painless Wirings site for starters.
Only a year late, but this may help someone. Chevy use to sell (for about $60.00, 1998) a module for day time running lights, that would run headlights at 50%. It uses your normal headlights. It included a wiring diagram for just about every major car sold in the US. Nice features I have not seen in other after market brands...
1) Setting the parking brake turned off the lights.
2) Turning on parking lights, turns off day time running lights
(Great feature when you have to pull up to a gate guard on a military base or the like. Must systems leave the daytime lights on no matter what.)
I have put DRLs in a few of my vehicles, I just used 2 or 3 inexpensive automotive relays. Mine are setup to just run the low beams at full brightness. It works quite well.
