When I was looking at the Ford all the Chevy and dodge guys were saying that the 6.4 only gets 7-8 mpg. WRONG! People will take one rumor spread it around as fact. There are guys with tuners and DPF delete are getting in the low 20's. It's not the motor it is the emission junk. This emission stuff cost everybody money in everything they buy. The price of wasted diesel is reflected in the price of everything and everybody pays it. Kinda like taxes!
Hate to change topics a little. But I looked at Ford Escape for the wife ended up with a Grand Marquis. She gets 22 mpg driving fast and hard all this with a big car and a V8.
I have a F450 4x4 dually like yours and I am getting about the same empty mileage as you. My fiver weighs in at 13,800 lbs. I just got mine and haven't towed yet. If I get what you get or a little better with the weight and size of the F450 I'll be happy. I got 9-10 mpg with my 1999 F350 with the 7.3 modded out.
wait until you tow with it. What a dream. After towing the first couple of thousand miles I did notice increase mty milage after 5,000 miles. I can not say enough good things about towing with the 450. Enjoy.
We are doing better as we get more mileage on the truck..We are now at 14,500. We will never get the 18's and 20's that some folks claim on a stock big truck solo and I do not believe for one minute that anyone does on a regular basis. The new GM and Dodge trucks although several hundredl lbs lighter do about the same. We pull over 13K and are over 22K total..10/11 on average interstates 15/17 solo..we have seen 18 on rare occasion.Example we pulled the turnpike last month and saw 10.8 at the end of the trip. Last week we pulled in two lane rolling hills with many short steep grades...averaged 8.5MPG. So should I say my MPG is.....10.8 or 8.5 or the rare 18 that we get solo..??? and we have got 7MPG on some very steep grades..so should I say my MPG is 7??

I can't wait to tow with it. I want to compare to my '99 7.3. I love the huge brakes on this truck as well as the tight turning radius of the F450 4x4 with the wide track front end. This truck is built like a tank!

You are exactly right. That is where some people come up with their mpg and seem to just remember the extremes. Going to Ohio this summer the 1st 800 miles I was a little under 8 towing but by the end of the trip it averaged out. Ohio was a little hillier than I thought it would be keeping that boost around 30# alot of the time
mallie, u said your truck is a service truck.. is it fully loaded with a utilitly body? if so it is thousands of pounds heavier than a normal pickup. if thats the case, then 9mpg sounds about right.. and your wifes stock f-250 will get better

Yes I have in enclosed service bed that is 66 inches hign and total truck weight is 12,000. The problem is, I replaced a 6.0 that was 2wd and it was getting a whopping 12mpg. This one would only do 8.3 for a year.
Guys,, I think there has to sort of computer or control change as nothing eles has changed that I know of. I would like to know what is causing this so we can all share it. There has to be a reason for such a dramatic change in mpg, over night.
I knew I might get a little lower mpg with 4x4 but I needed it.
Truth is, I will be perfectly happy with a consistant 1mpg if it will remain.
And I can tell you I do drive it like a truck and tho never jack rabit starts, it will see 80 on straight runs, just as the other truck did.
Oh..and we have been runing down the other side of a big hill with the 13K 5th wheel pushing and almost no boost and we were seeing 23MPG.. So can I say we get 23MPG towing 13K plus??? We can give you about any MPG number ...

LOL, No all you have to do is like I did. buy the truck reset the lie-o-meter and never touch it. 8500miles later and I get a average of 11.7.
Im sure its not perfect but I would bet its real close.
