Well I'm driving a 2008 F-450 and all of a sudden am getting 11.4 MPG.
Awsome is all I said to myself. As for the people giving the bad looks cause your driving a big truck i say "F" them. Hell I drive F-450 a F-350 and my wife drives a suburban. Not real fuel saver over here. Thats the beauty of a free country.
I have an 08 F350 Dually Crewcab and I am getting about 12MPH with it unloaded. I only have 1500 miles on it so I hope that the MPG's will improve as many stated above.
I get about 15 MPG with my 06 so I guess with all of the emission crap on the 08's that 13 or so is really not that bad.
Has anyone used an after market tuning kit that has had good results??
gwcon I'm getting 11.4 MPG and my truck has 21k miles on it. I'm looking into the exhaust and intake. I am also waiting for Banks to come out with a tuner. I know there are tuners out already but I have had great results with Banks products. Thats why I am waiting for them and not going with whats already out.
I just wrote up on another post that I installed a 60gal. Tank. So instead of only 38gal. I have 60gal. Does nothing for fuel economy but I have to fuel less times. It was $799.99 That was me doing the install.
Just wanted to update my MPG increase. I have got exactly 12k on the truck. I have got a consistent 8.3 hand calculated, every tank. Now for those of you unfamiliar with my truck, it has a service bed and weighs 12k. When it hits 250 miles or a little less, the low fuel has come on. Then a few weeks ago it went to 300. I thought it might have been a fluke since I was traveling to a job some 50 miles away, for 3 days in a row. But, not so. Back to my normal service routine, and the next two tanks are consistently 10mpg, actually slightly more. Like 10.16 this last time. Nothing has changed that I can think of. No service, same fuel from the same place. I did change oil some where in there, and the AC has been down about the same length of time, but I can’t imagine the ac eating that much. They are supposed to get the AC fixed today, so we will see. <o>></o>> But something obviously changed. Not the 12mpg I was getting with the 6.0, However I can live with 10mpg. I am simply baffled as to what could make this dramatic change, and not over a period of time, but suddenly. Any of you knowledgeable experts want to venture a guess what it is?<o>></o>>
Mallie, I'm no expert, but logic dictates only 4 things could have a sudden impact on mgp to that degree. Fuel, air flow (in and out), tire psi and computer. Since you made no changes in fuel and air, I'm wondering if you disconnected the battery recently and possibly that reset the pcm or some other default setting re-emerged. Other than increasing tire psi, I'm at a loss. I hope I get the same problem soon !
The piston rings are still seating. Driving this vehicle hard at this point, 12,000 miles, such as towing or high speed driving will further seat the rings sealing up the compression of burning fuel. Diesel engines take up to 30,000 miles to fully break in. These engines need to be driven hard after the first 500-1000 miles. Don't baby this engine too much at this point. I know it burns more fuel now but you will be happier for the rest of the time you have the truck getting better and better mileage.
I am at a loss as to why. But I just hope it holds out.
It seems to me that rings seating, bearing wearing in would happen over a period time. I don't know, maybe it is the AC,, got it fixed today, I guess I will see.
My feelings are these 6.4’s are more like race car engines of the past. So many factors affect them. They have so much power or torque and are affected by greater emission controls. This makes them all run different under so many conditions they are submitted to. The big factors are they take a while to warm up, they dislike hills, and dislike stop and go. I try to keep my boost under 20# when I can and under 2,000 rpms when empty. Towing I drive it pretty hard like it was made for. I keep up with traffic except I keep it under 68mph because my trailer is max weight for the tires. Our Ford Escape is the opposite, you drive it anyway you want and it still get 22mpg
Hate to change topics a little. But I looked at Ford Escape for the wife ended up with a Grand Marquis. She gets 22 mpg driving fast and hard all this with a big car and a V8.
I have a F450 4x4 dually like yours and I am getting about the same empty mileage as you. My fiver weighs in at 13,800 lbs. I just got mine and haven't towed yet. If I get what you get or a little better with the weight and size of the F450 I'll be happy. I got 9-10 mpg with my 1999 F350 with the 7.3 modded out.
Good to hear about the increase. I hope it happens again and again for you.
I have had good luck with mine. Empty I get 10mpg if I am a heavy on the pedal and I can get up to 14mpg when I am easy on the acceleration and the speed. Simply love the truck overall.
I have also towed approx 16k with it and goitten 8 to 8.5. With the same load I get about 9.6 with my '06 F350 with the same specs.
I still have under 2,000 miles on the truck. I have been real careful during the initial break-in(under 1200).
