I have a good buddy from back home, that lives in alberta now, that has a 06 6 liter diesel truck.
He has a 150 hp chip in it, and tows 7k lbs around out in the oil patch all the time.
So far he has 1 turbo, 2 sets of injectors, and 2 transmissions into it.
He figures the turbo and injectors are fixed (cause they havent busted again) but on the second tranny that ford put in, it didnt last the whole day before it blew.
Ive heard tuners could wreak havoc on these trucks, but that badly?
I know tuners can be tough on trannies but they should last for more than a day. That is just bad. I know reading in the diesel forums there are two outfits that make beefed up trannies for these trucks.
I read through the diesel forums here too, but it seems like every thread i found on a broken tranny, didnt really have much info about the actual problem. Alot of those guys get testy for some reason.
I wonder if I should tell my bud just to get rid of the tuner? So far ford has warrantied both trannies, but thats at like at least 10k bill for them.
Plus my buddy is losing cash for every day his truck is broken, and hes starting to toss around that nasty ol c#@$y word!
i don't want to be the *** here, but 90% of the time, isn't the problematic 6.0's the ones who people "play" with and try to pull 4-600 hp out of?? honestly i think he should dump the tuner and put up with a little less power, or get the tranny built by level 10 or something so its built to take the extra abuse.
Sherm, do you even know anyone personally who has one? I like your statistic - 90% of the problems tuner related.
The 6.0 is problematic - period. Some are good but many are substandard. The odds are worse on the earlier years but there are many later ones that are just as bad. My employee looked at a 2006 and we ran an oasis - just as many problems as my 2003 had. Some are ggod and the guys who have them are fortunate. The programmers will increase cylinder pressures on a design thats too weak in the first place. My headgaskets failed stock, and beleive me when I tell you this, I am more qualified than you on this subject. I bought the t shirt and lived the nightmare. I spent countless hours in the service department talking to the techs and other plagued owners and spent hundreds of internet hours researching the problems.
Sheldon, if your friend is running a module (like Edge) it will eat transmissions. You need to use a programmer that plugs into the OBD diagnostic port and has the ability to adjust transmission pressures.

Reason: Pointless bashing.........!
My point of posting this wasnt to start a 6 liter bashing, or praising here, I want to help my buddy out so he quits blowing the tranny. He has his 150 hp chip (thats what he calls it) and other then that has no supporting mods either. Hes not really into modding, just wanted to give his truck a little extra jam while pulling. At best, hes maybe making what, 400 horse, compared to the stock 325?(I think they came stock with 325)
Thanks for the tip on the edge tuner, I will try my best to find out what kinda tuner he has, and let him know that. Warren what kind of tuner/programmer do you have, and has it ever caused transmission problems?
I think Morris said his was stock (no tuner) and Im sure he hasnt had problems yet. I have a buddy i work with that blew his tranny, no tuner, while pulling, and we had an 03 shop truck that blew two trannies, no tuner. I figure at best my buddys truck had a crap stock tranny, but then he blew the second one, which kinda led me thinking the tuner had something to do with it.
7k isnt a big load for a psd either, is it? Ive pulled that with my 97 half ton, with a 4.6 liter in it!
Most trannies that come with diesel trucks can not take the load if they are worked hard. Chevy's have a little better auto tranny than the other two but they don't last much better either. Most guys end up bitting the bullet and getting a heavy duty tranny and they aren't that much more than the normal trannies and last way better.
Sherm, do you even know anyone personally who has one? I like your statistic - 90% of the problems tuner related.
yes... i know countless guys with them and only one is a bad truck, and guess what... its a chipped truck. 90% was just a number, no facts, but i'll put money down that the majority of current(this side of '03) problematic trucks are modified.
your situation is very sad...i feel for you...
i drove an '03 6.0 in calgary for 7 months and it worked hard, pulling a 16ft trailer loaded with tools every day. no once did THAT truck stumble. i know too many good 6.0's that offset the bad ones for me.
lets face it... its a FORD site, we'll hear of mostly FORD problems... if i can't promote my devotion of the product i love, i'll leave.
See the problem my buddy has with building a built up tranny, is these trannies are supposed to be good till like 500 horse or so. So far it hasnt cost him anything except his time (he works in the oil patch, his time is worth alot) and a few bucks of diesel to bring it to the dealer.
I mentioned the tuner to him, and he said, that ford said, that shouldnt have caused the problem.
Ya right, guess I helped him out as much as I could!
My friends parents haul campers back from the US and they have had all kind of tranny problems and say even the guys with standards have problems to, although not as often. They have a Dodge with over a 1.5 million kms, had the head done once but have had lots of tranny rebuilds.
I personally wouldnt touch a dodge tranny with a 10 foot pole. I have known way to many of my dads buddies that have went through trannies left right and center (mainly autos) and they were mainly behind the 5.9's.
My grandpa has a 93ish dodge dakota with a 318 (ya its fast!!) that has gone through a couple of trannies, and it only has 113k on it.
Hell my buddy used to have an 81 dodge that we went crusing arond in alot and it ate a couple of those stock 727's behind a stock (very gutless) 318.
that seems to be dodges claim to fame... trannies and front ends... chebby has the front end and rear diff problems, ford gets the well...you know the early 6.0/torqshift dealio...
