I have a 2006 F-150 4x4. I have had it for a month now and have noticed that i cannot get a accurate reading from the fuel guage at all times. It seems to change from day to day. For example. It is on a quarter of a tank when i drive home from work I check it before I shut it off. I get in it the next day to go to work and it shows almost empty??? i will put more gas in and it does not move untill I shut if off and start it several hours later. What causes this?
No I have it shut off. It did the same thing today on me. I started the truck and headed to work. It showed I had a 1/4 tank then dropped off to about what it should be on my way to work.
When I start mine up it always reads 1/2 full. When I drive to work 26miles away it"ll read correctly. Done it from day 1. I have 6500 miles on it now.
You problably have sulfur buildup on the sending unit. Ford has a SSM for putting a fuel additive in the tank, but we've found that that doesn't really help. Replacing the sending unit is the best fix. Also, when refueling these trucks you must have the key off. If you have the key on or engine running it may take up to half a day of driving for the gauge to change.

All the same, I would still advise icsd71 to try running a couple of tanks treated with Techron first before shelling out for a sending unit. It worked for me.
