I bought a secondhand lightbar(48" Federal Streethawk) and tested it by running it straight off the battery. Obviously this isn't the proper way to wire can anyone tell me how?
I hade a Federal 47H on my truck. When I wired it I came from the battery with 10 gage wire to a fuse right by the battery. From there I ran through the firewall to the two switches that controlled the lights. One for the rotators and one for the end flashers. Then I ran back through the firewall and then up through the cowl and up the winchild post to the light bar. Also I ran my ground right from the battery at the same time.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Mar-02 AT 01:19 PM (EST)]I have wired several lightbars on all of my vehicles over the years. I have found the safest way and to get the most amperage to the light bar, I always fuse the wireing and use an ford starter soleniod in series with the hot wire for the rotators. This provides the most amperage and allows you to use a smaller control wire that goes to the switch.
If it was me ,I would use a 30 amp Relay & use direct power through the relay as opposed to a switch.
That's what they are designed for.
I've heard ,The starter solenoid's are not designed for continuous current.
The small contacts heat up to much and burn out.

I kind of got a stupid question. I know that having amber light bars are legal and all...but why would you want one? Just curious is all to find out some people's views on why to have them. For me...I was going put one on my Ranger for added safety since it always seems that I manage to roll up on a wreck before the state ever hears about it. Plus I tend to stop and assist others broke down. But after some serious thought I have decided not to go with the light bar as I originally thought. I'm going to be putting rollbars in the back with 5 KC Daylighters on it (2 forward lighting, 2 side lighting, 1 back lighting) so no light bar. But then I can still legally use hide-a-way strobes in my corner lights, put a arrowstick with end strobes on the botton of my rollbars, headliner mount strobes and/or grille strobes. So then I've got visibility from all angles and warning power at all angles too. Anythoughts?
Actually mine was Red and Clear. I was a firefighter and that is the reason for having them. As far as saftey goes I have no problem with people using Amber lights for road side assistance. I just wish people would slow down and move over when they see flashing lights ahead of them. Who knows it might be their mother, brother, sister or another family member that someone is helping.
Yeah, I hear you about people not clearing the path. I kind of agree with departments using both halogen and strobes on one vehicle cause it always seems that when you think one will be an eye catcher, it isn't. Where with the combo...seems everyone sees you coming. Thanks for your reasong. Have a great day.
