Started out as a throttle plate removal - but I don't have one! Soooo, I figured as long as I have the intake elbow off, I'll clean the Engine Gunk-up Valve.
What a &*%$#*! mess. I look and feel like I've been tarred and rolled in dirt. My truck has about 60k and this is the first EGR valve cleaning. I can only guess that the rest of the intake is coated with the gunk I scraped out from in and around the EGR valve.
This thing has to go.
FYI - It is recommended to clean out the MAF sensor hose and the EBP tube also when cleaning the EGR. That being said, I didn't do them when I pulled my EGR valve and I have not had any problems. I guess it means they are not plugged, but I wish I had at least looked at them.
Clearly the EGR system is a big source of our problems. That being said, some folks EGR systems do not have near the problem that others do. After removing the original EGR valve and re-installing a new EGR valve (3k miles ago), I have tried to do everything I have ever read to prevent gunking it up again - except switch to a CJ4 oil (I still have a large supply of Schaeffer 5W-40 to use up). I am anxious to pull it again to see if it is less of a mess, but it will be awhile ..........
After a friend and I did the CCV reroute we cleaned his EGR 12K later and only to find a fine soot on it like inside the tail pipe. If yours is as bad and you say you might want to try this mod to help clean our your system. His truck has 34K on it and is clean as a whistle inside.

Cool, thanks. I will try that if it isn't beyond my comfort level and meager tool set. But if the dealers start giving away 08 models I might say screw it and let somebody else do it.
Is there a kit? Can anybody recommend a procedure?
Might just be my imagination but I think the truck ran smoother today and was a tad more responsive.
I was pleasntly surprised when I pulled the EGR valve on my 06 and found only fine soot on it as well and no major oily gunk. I hope it stays that way. I asume that the new ULSD diesel has to help with that. I just changed the oil and used 15w40 CJ4 Chevron Delo motor oil. I know a lot of ppl on this forum seem to be running the synthetic but I figured this stuff never let me down in my 7.3 So mine as well try it in this truck to.
