From previous research, it seems that my truck is equipped with a 4.10 (or is it 4.11) rear end. I have a 5 spd manual tranny. I don't do a lot of towing over 6-7k lbs and really for the most part its pretty flat with only slight grades. I would like to keep my rpms at 2k (or lower??)doing 70mph....currently I am hitting about 2300 doing barely over 60. Is there a different gear that I can have installed that would accomplish this or am I over thinking it. I feel like 3k rpms is to high to be cruising for hundreds of miles, plus it would kill my mileage.
What do gear sets cost and what would an average install cost be?
if you really want ot change gears then to get what you want you need a minum of 3.55's. they are the cheapest and most readily available for your axles
ring and pinion- roughly 200 bucks per axle.
bearing/install kit- about 100 bucks per axle.
price for a shop to do it all? my estimate would say with a labor rate of 55 bucks an hour most shops will charge you 4-5 hours for an axle overhaul.
if you have a dana 50 up front it will be alot more than a dana 60 but the front axle will still be more along the lines of 7-8 hours. so you are looking at a rough estimate of 700 bucks in labor
4.10's suck. i recommend 3.55's in any diesel ford. i have a complete rear end with 3.55's in perfect working order open diff. i will sell u or gears only if you wish to go that way. pm me if your interested well talk numbers. i have i think 10 or more rear ends and i need to get rid of them all. if anyone else wants a rear end for a ford, ill talk. i have 3.55 and 4.10's for sell. and a 1/2 ton ford and a dually dodge rear end. and i have a 84 model 3/4 ton rear with 3.07's but im saving that one for my 1/2 ton ford-5.9 cummins

Where are you located, and do you have a rear end w/ 3.55's that will work on my dually.....I think I forgot to mention that in my OP!
Since this job will probably be more expensive then I want to spend, I guess my next question is geared towards (no pun intended!!) living with the 4.10's. Is it safe to motor down the highway at 2500-2750 RPM's? It sure sounds loud and strenuous to me, and at that RPM it appears I am also into the boost full time at about 5-7 psi. I know the fuel mileage would suck, but just curious if it is OK or if its harmfull to the motor/turbo?
