Looking at a 2001 f350 7.3 AT dually 4x4 crew with 210K miles. I have no experience with the dt444. I'm wanting a diesel tow rig. This one is fairly local with price around 11K. What do you look out for in this package? It has a fairly fresh (year old) tranny. Have heard of a lot of guys switching to 6 spd. Is this for personal pref. or durability of auto trans? Does anyone know gross towable kingpin weight of this combo? brakes, susp, airbag setups?
thanks, Brad
The 7.3L engine is very reliable. The trucks are well built and only have a handful of issues that need to be taken care of. The 4R100 is known to be the Achilles Heel of these trucks. With yours being recently rebuilt they probably corrected the "diode issue" with it.
The 7.3L trucks are getting harder to find and are often what people are looking for. So if the truck is in good shape, that is a good price.

The 7.3 is reveared as the best diesel Ford ever equipped in a truck. The International name for it is T444E not DT444. DT444 was a different motor.
The transmission that truck has is the 4R100. It does not have the best reputation, particularly the 2001 model year in which a part called a "mechanical diode" was used and it fails frequently. Once it has been fixed it should be done though. However the manual transmissions are very stout.
Towable weight will depend on the configuration of the truck. There is a difference between legal weight and how much the truck can handle. Air bags will greatly help the suspension but you will need to check the listed capacities for the truck and do some math. The only REAL way to know is to get the truck on a certified scale.
