Hi I am new to the list, and am very excited - it seems there are lot's of very smart Ford lovers out there!!!
K: I have an '00 F250SD - 6.8 V10 - 5 spd manual trans.
I love the truck, but want a 6 spd manual.
Anyone know, can this be done? How difficult ? Would you recommend ?
Any help is appreciated!
Peace,
Mike
You have 2WD or 4WD ? 2WD's can add a GearVendors, or comparable, under/overdrive for 10 speeds forward. Or, you will have to add a 6 speed transmission. Exactly what are you trying to achieve ? More low end power, less freeway rpm, what ? Everything has a price somewhere, tell us what you need and you'll get some good answers from these V-10 guys, good luck, Ken
Ken thanks for the quick reply. Looking for less fwy rpms. Need to know if later model 6spd manuals bolt right up to a 2000 w/ the 5spd manual. And if it does where can I get one? Any ideas?

Less rpm's can be accomplished in a few different ways, bigger tires, higher (numerically lower) gears or overdrives. Are you four wheel drive or two wheel drive ? It'll make a different in cost, unless cost is no object, Ken
You guys are absolutely correct - it would be crazy to swap a 5sp for a 6sp - for a lousy 100rpm.
That said, what would you suggest? I don't do a lot of towing, but do drive the truck a lot on the hwy. Just looking to save some rpm's. I realize it's not a honda civic but you can't blame a guy for trying to save some $. Already have larger wheels/rims. I'm thinkig chip? or gear swap? It's a 4wd. Not sure how to identify the differential ratio. Actually, never messed w/ transmissions & don't know where to start. I appreciate any ideas or pointers. U guys are OK... <M>

You're going to spend alot, to MAYBE get .5 mpg. It could be you lost some mileage with larger tires. It could be your speedo is registering lost mpg when you are actually not reading gas mileage correctly because your speedo is off. What size tires, and what is your rpm at hwy speed now ? You may be better off with some aero mods, ie; tonneau cover, canopy, etc to help. The very best way to increase mpg is to keep your foot out of it. That sounds trite but it is the truth. I loaned my V-10 to someone who got almost 16 mpg on the freeway, I can't get that, no way, even if I try, so what does that tell ya ? Ken
lower revs is NOT necessarily better for an engine.
Ask the I6 guys with 35s and 2.73 gears. They get horrendous mileage and guys with 35s and 373s get better mileage. It's all about staying in the powerband of the engine.
Having a 4x4 is the ultimate strike, being so aerodynamic (yes, sarcasm).
Chip will need premium (unless you have to run that in a v10, doubtful) no matter what and doesn't do much for a stick shift, unlike how it firms up shifting in a slushbox.
